Brought up a command window in Windows 7, and saw: 

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7600]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation.  All rights reserved.

Yep. Windows 7 is in fact Windows version 6. Gotta love those Marketing folk.
