There are so many layers to the story told by this one picture. Other pictures of Chinese cities I have seen are too myopic or too obvious in presenting a single point of view. I don’t believe the scope of this picture was intentional of the part of the photographer (which may be why this works so well for me).
The polluted skyline reminds me of the LA basin in the late 1960’s/early 1970’s. The distant army of cranes tells us the frenetic pace of growth. The bridge is a grand entrance into the city. The two happy and hopeful looking young people flank and turn toward the entrance. The pile of rubble on which they stand represents a discarded past.
